The Lagos State Ministry of Education has procured and distributed various science practical materials and chemicals to secondary schools for the ongoing Y2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, disclosed this on Wednesday in Ikeja, noting that the procurement and distribution of the science materials, as well as the prompt payment of students’ WAEC fees by the present administration, are in consonance with efforts to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education in schools.
In her words: “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier approved the payment of over N700 million as registration and examination fees for 51,187 students taking this year’s 2021 WASSCE examinations in tandem with the free education policy of the State Government”.
Adefisayo stressed that the State has provided several science practical materials for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science for over 46,236 students sitting for this year’s examination, informing that the various chemicals, substances and consumables that would also be used for practicals will cost the State Government more than N80 Million.
“The State Government has also provided funds to schools for other perishables asides from the chemicals which will be procured a day before the examination. STEAM education is very important and as a government, we have constantly made provision of standard science laboratories in our schools. We have not only renovated laboratories in some schools but have built additional ones in other schools”, she disclosed.
Revealing that the science materials and chemicals provided by the State Government were distributed among the 322 senior public secondary schools in the State, the Commissioner advised the students to put in their best in the examinations, stressing that it is a critical phase that determines the career path they intend to pursue.
