According to Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the demolition is necessary to transform the market into a modern facility.

“The current state of the Pelewara Market did not fit into the modern Lagos market plan for the state,” he said.

The government has begun paying compensation to affected traders and occupants, but some have expressed concerns about the slow pace of the process. “We were not given adequate notice or compensation,” said one trader, who wished to remain anonymous.
