Lagos State Senior Secondary School Three (SSS 3) pupils and their counterparts in Tech 3, that is, pupils in Technical Class Three will resume school on August 3, 2020 to enable them to prepare for their external examinations.

Although no date has been fixed for the West African Examination Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), private schools in the state have been allowed to open their schools for only SS3 students with Lagos State giving a warning that it would deal with any school that goes beyond the government’s instruction.

According to him, South- West governors are working on how to ensure that WASSCE is conducted in September this year.  He said, “At the last meeting of South-West governors with their commissioners for education, they said they are still working on how WASSCE would be conducted in September, because if these pupils don’t sit the exam, the 2020/2021 session will be seriously affected.

“We had a meeting with the Director General, Quality Assurance, Lagos State Ministry of Education and we shall be resuming on August 3. We have been given clearance for reopening of schools but if a school does not have the requirements, they may not be allowed to resume. For this reason, we also set up NAPPS quality assurance committee to go round and ensure our members meet up with these requirements.”

Lagos State Ministry of Education confirmed to Franktalknow.com on Sunday that the private schools had been permitted to resume on August 3.

The Public Affairs Officer in the ministry, Mr Kayode Abayomi, however, said the reopening was strictly for SS3 and Tech3 students. He said that this was done to enable the students to prepare for their WASSCE.

He however said that only the Federal Government could determine the date of the external examination.

The Lagos State Government had earlier announced that schools would reopen for graduating pupils in primary six, JSS 3 and SSS 3 on Monday, August 3, 2020.

But  shortly after its announcement, the Federal Government suspended the decision to reopen  its schools citing the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country as its reason for taking such decision. It also said Nigeria would not be participating in the 2020 WASCCE organised by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), noting that it would prefer for the pupils to lose one year than for them to be lost to the pandemic.
