The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has refuted claims linking its operatives to the tragic discovery of a deceased body hanging by the gate of an estate along the Lagos-Shagamu Expressway.

In a statement issued on Friday in Lagos by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, clarified that the agency played no role in the incident.

He addressed swirling rumours on social media alleging that the deceased’s vehicle had been impounded by LASTMA officers.

The body, discovered early Thursday by passersby, prompted immediate notification to the Shagamu Road Police.

Speculations arose at the scene regarding the victim’s identity and circumstances, with some suggesting he resembled a motorcyclist (okada rider) or a tricyclist (Marwa rider). Bakare-Oki emphasized the challenge of identification amidst multiple operators present.

“It is regrettable that this incident occurred near an estate gate along the Lagos-Shagamu Expressway,” Bakare-Oki lamented, extending condolences to the deceased’s family.

He cautioned against the spread of unverified information and encouraged the public, particularly motorists, to use LASTMA’s toll-free call centre for accurate traffic updates.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s remains have been evacuated by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, Yaba, Lagos.
