A group identified as Concerned Staff of Lagos State University (LASU) has written a letter to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alleging contravention of the governor’s directive on the fresh process of selecting the university’s ninth vice chancellor.

The group in a letter signed by Olalekan Akinloye and Olatunji Alonge, is therefore  asking the governor to direct the institution’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Professor Adebayo Ninalowo, to  constitute a fresh committee elected by both the Senate and Council as stated in the LASU Law 2004 for the purpose of selecting a new vice chancellor as earlier directed.

Recall that the governor had ordered a fresh  selection process for the university’s next vice chancellor.

The group said the fresh process needs to be completely fresh in content and in spirit.

“This will ensure that the process is fair and unhinged by those with the intention of altering the guidelines.

“We are convinced that those whom the Ninalowo Led-Joint Council and Senate Selection Committee had biases against in the cancelled exercise will still not get fair treatments,” it said.

It alleged that the plan would be to ensure that they are either not shortlisted at all, or they will not make the first three overall.

The letter reads: “We believe that the Committee may want to justify their earlier result by ensuring that those candidates do not pass at the interview. If this happens, the type of crisis you hope to forestall in the University will be inevitable.

“Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Professor Adebayo Ninalowo, is in contravention of your directive that a fresh process should start for the appointment of the ninth Vice-Chancellor as set out in the press release by your Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile.

“Since the advertisement is to be placed afresh; a new shortlist of candidates is to be done; and a fresh interview is to be conducted, a new Joint Council and Senate Selection Committee should also be reconstituted.

“Rather than calling for the Governing Council to elect three members of Council afresh and allow Senate to elect its own three members anew to the Joint Council and Senate Selection Committee, Professor Ninalowo summoned the old Joint Council and Senate Selection Committee whose report has been cancelled to a meeting on Monday 11thJanuary, 2020, for the primary objective of re-conducting the exercise.

“This is why we strongly feel that Professor Ninalowo needs to recuse himself from this fresh Joint Council and Senate Selection Committee. Our prayer is for you to set aside the cancelled Committee and order that a fresh Committee elected by both the Senate and Council as it is stated in the LASU Law 2004be constituted.”
