The Super Eagles put on a spectacular display in their first game in the CAF 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament earlier this week to gain their first three points of the campaign. The team played against a formidable Mohamed Salad-led Egypt side.
Nigeria made light work of the Egyptian side, leaving the Pharaohs mummified with their lightning-quick interplay and fierce attacking display.
Although it was a memorable night for every member of the Super Eagles squad as Nigeria shattered Egypt’s longstanding group stage record, some players enjoyed more time in the spotlight than others.
Nigerian goalie, Maduka Okoye, is one of those. But he is not just enjoying the spotlight for football-related reasons. He has arguably been the most talked-about player in the tournament, as the chiselled 22-year-old has turned heads not just for his elite shot-stopping skills but also for his looks.
In fact, many normally-unconcerned ladies from Africa’s most populous nation have taken to social media to express interest in the national team’s affairs mainly because of the presence of their steady-handed ‘internet boyfriend.’

Okoye has seen his mentions on the recently unbanned Twitter shoot through the roof after increased activity on his page since AFCON commenced. On January 12, after Nigeria’s victory over Egypt, the Watford goalkeeper posted a photo of himself on Twitter captioned “onto the next one” (sic).

The post, showing the slender figure of Okoye with a youthful hairdo and tattooed arms, baring due to his sleeveless Team Nigeria training kit, has gone viral since garnering over 70,000 likes and nearly 7,000 retweets. And a majority of that attention came from women.
Hilarious reactions from both men and women alike about everything but the ongoing AFCON were on full display.
“I love you, please. I’m the next one,” @flawless_juliet said.
One user, @BerryMalone_ said, “Boss try dey rest small. Babe wey I dey crush on just dey post you for Whatsapp since yesterday”.
Another use, @Preshie02586462, said “handsome….I don’t like guys with tattoos but am I love now ” (sic).
“I cannot believe the Super Eagles would still put Maduka Okoye through stress on Saturday. Can’t another GK do the work and y’all bring him in the 90th minute? My poor baby,” user @D_butterflie said.
@silkytommy said the defenders should make sure Maduka does as little work as possible at AFCON. “Maduka Okoye is FINE fine, that’s all that matters, defenders should make sure that boy isn’t stressed,” she said.
