The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has disclosed that Nigeria has begun discussion with the other four members of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) namely Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia on the possibility of fixing a new date for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Nigerian government had earlier announced that the exam would hold between August 4 and September 5.  It however made a u-turn, stating that Nigerian candidates would not be participating in the examination this year.  The Federal Government said it took the decision to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

Nwajiuba, who spoke in Abuja on Friday, said, “We met with WAEC on Monday and (we) have agreed to further consult with four other countries on a new examination date.”

Recall that at the Monday meeting, the  Head of WAEC National Office in Nigeria, Patrick Areghan, had explained  that it would take time to print question papers, adding that other convoluted logistic considerations might come into play while fixing a new date.
