The National Association of Resident doctors (NARD) has called off its one week strike.

The association in a statement on Sunday said its National Executive Council resolved to suspend the strike with effect from Monday.

The association had embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday over unpaid salaries, non-payment of hazard allowance, and a dearth of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in hospitals, among others.

This prompted the Federal Government to release a total sum of N4.5 billion to 31 Federal Teaching and Medical Centres in the country last week Friday.  The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had said the amount was expected to cover hazard and inducement allowances for the month of April and May.

Although the association said that some of its demands had been met by the government, it noted that the strike was suspended to give the federal and state governments time to fulfil its outstanding demands following appeals by the Speaker of the House of Representative, Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and other stakeholders.
