A Nigerian graduate of a Ukrainian university, Caleb Obari, has disappeared while taking a boat trip in Odesa, according to Kyiv Post.

Obari, 20,  just graduated from Ukraine’s Sumy State Agrarian University when he attended a yacht party at the invitation of a woman in the southern city of Odesa on Aug. 20.  He never returned.

The boat set sail from the Sauvignon yacht club in Odesa and went four kilometers out from the coast, but returned back without Obari. According to the report, neither rescuers of the State Emergency Service nor the police had found the young man a week later.

Nigerian users on social media shared posts with #JusticeforCaleb and #BlackLivesMatter hashtags.

“The unfortunate disappearance of this young (man) won’t be taken lightly,”  wrote Ekemini-Abasi Okon, head of Nigerian Student Union Ukraine on his Facebook page.  “I urge all relevant authorities to look into why he disappeared, who made him disappear and within the shortest possible time!”

The National Police in Odesa Oblast   said it had opened criminal proceedings under the premeditated murder statute and reported that experts will make “all necessary examinations if the body is found, including the cause of death.”

According to the Odesa volunteer group called Rescue Platform 911, Obari’s friend waited for him after the party was over, but the only thing he got was Obari’s personal belongings and phone without any explanations of what happened at sea.

Obari’s parents are in limbo too and have solicited help from Nigerian and Ukrainian authorities over their missing son.

In a video that surfaced online on Wednesday, Obari’s parents pleaded with Nigerians in Ukraine to assist with information on their missing son’s whereabouts.

Mark, who is Caleb’s father, in the video, said, “My son who just graduated from Sumy State Agrarian University is missing. It is very unfortunate. We never expected what had happened.

“On Thursday, I got a call from the embassy that my son was invited by a woman for a party and when they came back, they came without my son. I was surprised, so I had to call the embassy back. I also called the school.

“We are not happy and comfortable. We don’t sleep again. That is why we have decided to escalate this matter and get to the root of it. Who took this boy out and never returned with him?
“We want every good Nigerian in Ukraine to come into this matter. This could happen to anyone if we take it for granted.”

On her part, Caleb’s mother expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of her son.

“I am looking for my son right now. He was invited to a surprise party to drive on a yacht. Caleb did not return.

“I strongly believe that you (the host) are hiding him somewhere. Our son must be found. This is my belief. I believe that wherever my son is held hostage, he would be found. I believe he is safe and would be found,” she said.

According to Alexander Sopelnik, head of Rescue Platform 911, Obari was invited to the party by Vera Topalova, owner of the Odesa BDSM-themed bar Iznanka, and he was the only foreigner among the other nine Ukrainian passengers.

While the police announced they had opened criminal proceedings, Sopelnik from the 911 platform accused the National Police of unwillingness to search for the missing man. He said that the police did not make any public statements about a missing man on the day when Obari disappeared, but only on Aug. 25.
