The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that it would embark on a nationwide protest by going on strike in February if the federal government fails to address its demands.
Many students condemned the planned strike, decrying the elongated years of schooling spent pursuing degrees that would have taken far fewer years to accomplish in a stable academic environment.
Some students fulminated over the fact that the strike was coming just weeks after their respective schools announced resumption dates.
UNIJOS, for instance, began resumption in the first two weeks of January, and many expressed fears at the strike reports as they said they had already paid for lodging and other school-related fees.

ASUU had planned to resume strike in January 2022. However, following the intervention of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and other pressure groups, the industrial action was moved to February pending the government’s resolution of the issues brought forward from the December 2020 Memorandum of Action (MoA).
However, ASUU extended the deadline to February 1 to address all outstanding issues arising from the December 2020 Memorandum of Action (MoA).In an interview with THISDAY Newspaper over the weekend, ASUU President, Mr Emmanuel Osodake, said that the union had agreed to wait till February.
“ASUU leadership has agreed to wait till February to give NIREC and other stakeholders enough room to address the union’s grievances,” he said.
