The demands came in a communique signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The NLC has called for the reversal of detrimental government policies contributing to the economic crisis, urging the implementation of measures that prioritize citizens’ welfare, job creation, and equitable resource distribution.

The union also condemned the excessive violence used by security forces against protesters and announced plans to observe a National Day of Mourning to honor those injured or killed in the protests.

“The NEC-in-session noted that the Government cannot hope to stop a democratic protest by threatening the people who are already losing their lives by the unrepentant massacre of unarmed protesters by the Police but by concrete actions and reasonable dialogue,” the communique stated.

In addition, the NLC is demanding an independent investigation into the violence against protesters, with a call for accountability and justice for the victims. The union has also criticized the government’s response to the protests, accusing security agencies of using violence and neglecting broader security issues.

The NLC emphasized that the right to protest is a fundamental democratic right, and its suppression through violence is unacceptable.

The NEC has urged the federal government to engage in genuine dialogue with protest representatives, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to address the issues and prevent further unrest.

Immediate relief measures are also on the NLC’s agenda, including direct food aid, subsidies on essential commodities, and social safety nets to alleviate public suffering.

The NLC has called for the government to prevent its officials from interfering with labor issues and to retract any unwarranted advice that could exacerbate industrial tensions.
