Ahead of the June 13 election for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, the All Progressives Congress Integrity Group has called on the National Working Committee of the party to rethink its zoning arrangement.

The appeal is coming three days after the National Chairman of APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, warned supporters and lawmakers to stop addressing Kaduna lawmaker, Tajudeen Abbas, as the incoming Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Adamu averred there is an ongoing consultation with other aspirants still in the race and other legislative stakeholders.

The APC had earlier adopted Abbas and Imo rep-elect, Benjamin Kalu, as its candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker seats respectively, a situation that sparked outrage from other aspirants in the race.

In the upper chamber, the party micro-zoned the position of Senate president to the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godwin Akpabio and Deputy Senate President to the Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Jibrin Barau.

Reacting to the arrangement in a statement issued on Friday, the National Coordinator of the group, Malam Dawu Mohammed, described the zoning formula as unfair, unjust and inequitable.

Mohammed hinged his argument on the zoning of the Deputy Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives offices to the North West without any consideration for the people of the North Central.

While describing the party action as an open act of marginalisation, the group said there was no amount of debate that can justify ‘a zoning script that does not answer to the very question of inclusivity, mutual respect and oneness for a nation with growing fault lines.’

He said, “We urge the APC leadership to have a rethink and save the APC from a possible implosion. We can have the offices zoned to give the various parts of the country a better sense of belonging to the country, other than what we have now.

“The north central has performed so well in retaining the governing party, and the versatility lawmakers the zone can boast of should earn them the position of Deputy Senate President.”
