One of the governors in the northern part of the country, Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto is facing widespread criticism for renaming a prominent road in the state after Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu.

Originally known as “Pepsi Road,” the street was slated for renaming on June 3 by Katsina State Governor Umaru Dikko Radda. However, the ceremony was postponed, according to reports from Peoples Gazette.

Photos of the newly named “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road” surfaced on social media over the weekend, prompting a wave of public disapproval. A new date for the road’s commissioning has yet to be announced.

Local residents expressed their dissatisfaction, arguing that the governor’s decision lacks justification. “The governor overlooked many distinguished individuals from Sokoto and instead chose to honor the president’s son, who has no notable ties to Sokoto or the northern region,” said Salisu Ahmadu, a local resident, in an interview with Peoples Gazette.

The backlash extended to social media, where users voiced their concerns. One user, @UncleAnass, posted a photo of the road sign and commented, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is tarnishing the reputation of Sokoto with his incompetence and servility. Naming a road after Seyi Tinubu, not even the President himself, is disgraceful.”

Another user, @Heinz_Gunner, likened the move to autocratic practices, saying, “This is how it begins!” Meanwhile, @jnraib2 pointed out that even Lagos, the Tinubu family’s stronghold, hasn’t named a road after Seyi Tinubu.

“Naming a road in Sokoto after Seyi Tinubu highlights Nigeria’s tendency to celebrate individuals with minimal contributions to the nation’s development,” tweeted @AsIngawa001.

Efforts to obtain comments from Abubakar Bawa, the spokesperson for the Sokoto governor, were unsuccessful.

Despite holding no official position in his father’s administration, Seyi Tinubu is perceived as influential within the All Progressives Congress (APC), frequently accompanying his father on international trips. Notably, he was barred from attending a Federal Executive Council meeting several months ago.
