The National Universities Commission (NUC) has updated the list of approved institutions awarding Masters and doctoral degrees in Nigeria.
The commission, in a bulletin, accused some Nigerian universities of running unapproved post-graduate programmes, noting that some parastatals and institutes were also awarding such degrees either on their own or in affiliation with some universities locally and abroad.

It said such practices were unethical and antithetical to quality assurance, adding that the general public should be aware of fake post-degree-awarding universities.
Nigeria has 170 universities. Out of this figure, 43 are federal, 48 state-owned and 79 privately owned universities.
Out of this figure, the commission explained that only 32 federal universities, 31 state universities and 31 private universities are allowed to run postgraduate programmes in the country,
“The general public should note the universities that have the approval to offer post-graduate programmes at the Masters’ and PhD levels in Nigeria in Nigeria,” it said.
The commission also warned the private sector and employers of labour that only certificates issued by the approved universities were valid.
