At sunrise on January 31st, 1952, the last day of the first month of the new year, you began your journey of uncertainties to a complex world and a country named Nigeria. That morning, the great maker also stipulated that July 30, 2024, would be your return date to His eternal palace of peace and comfort. July 30th was a day before the end of the month of July. In some hemisphere, it’s always hotter than July.

Imagine the week before your exit. I wondered how you lived out the remainder of those moments, not aware of the expected end date and time of your existence. You had a concert engagement. Your friend was celebrating her 70th birthday and you had been engaged as the star entertainer for the glamorous evening.

That week, you rehearsed, ran errands attended to visitors, mused and chatted on the phone with new friends, old lovers and families. You gossiped, perhaps, bragged about the expected birthday performance, invited your friends to come out and have fun with you. You text and engaged on social media, perhaps, watched Nollywood movies, cooked for the family, made love, hugged, kissed, romanced your significant other. You lived humanly: just another day to be normal. You expected to live on, not knowing that time ticked on, closer than objects in the mirror. But the days of our lives, that week, rolled on, until Saturday.

On the morning of July 30th, you did your usual household chores, planned your day, reminded your band members of their responsibilities as a band. You appealed for a great performance. You did not know that in a few hours, everything shall end, your circles of life would complete. Yet you paced on, unknown what the next moment would bring.

You got ready for the event. You had special fashion designed for the event. You wanted to show up charming, attractive and adorable. You engaged your hairdresser to tidy your new dreadlock. You visited the nail saloon and had facial treatments. You were ready to show them that despite age and time, the elegant stallion still galloped and radiated.

You walked away from your bathtub after shower, You did not tell the bathtub it was your last bath. You got dressed in your bedroom, looked at the dress mirror as you applied make ups and wore your clothes. You did not tell the mirror it was the last time it would see you naked alone in your bed room and starring at it as you applied make ups and got dressed, the last time for a last show. You would not be able to undress yourself anymore. The undertaker shall undress you, later that night at the morgue!!!

That evening, you arrived to the venue and walked majestically into the splendid hall of the event. The birthday girl was excited by your presence. The cameras caught you stepping, magnificently, on the red carpet, through the hallways to be seated at a designated table. Your band had set up on stage, waiting for the time that you would sing. You looked regal, fresh, happy and enchanting, sitting on the table with friends. If only we knew that those smiles, the glee, the attention and those winks would be the last of everything!!!!

The MC introduced you to the guests. Your band cranked up and you belted the best of your songs. You serenaded . The camera captured you entertaining the audience. You recognized a few friends and pulled them from their seats to the dance floor to dance with you.

The crowd responded enthusiastically, danced along as you sang. You sweated. Your powerful vocals captivated the audience. You gasped too. I saw that in the video shared. A few minutes after your last song, an encore, you sat at your assigned table with friends and admirers, requested for water. You sipped the water.

Suddenly, you slumped and everything about you, all that you accomplished in life, living and existing, slumped suddenly…..

Your beautiful body remains in the morgue, awaiting your burial. My Sunday morning imagination of your last moments.
