The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the defection of Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of the state, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Shaibu’s defection, which was announced on Saturday, has been described as a “betrayal” by the PDP.

Shaibu, who was impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly in June, was reinstated by a court ruling on Wednesday. However, he has now defected to the APC, citing his desire to “add value” to the party.

“I announce our movement to the APC. We have come to add value to the party,” Shaibu said at the inauguration of the National Campaign Council of the APC in Benin. “It is time to take back our state. We will not talk too much because action will speak for us. We are not afraid; we are ready to move forward.”

However, the PDP has described Shaibu’s defection as a “betrayal” and a “slap in the face” of the party that gave him the opportunity to serve as Deputy Governor.

“Those who are now coming to us because of his exit are more than those who are leaving the party, so we are good,” said Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP in Edo State. “I wish them good luck in their official endeavors. The PDP cannot be depleted because of this.”

The APC has welcomed Shaibu’s defection, with the party’s national chairman, Abdulahi Ganduje, saying that the party had “50 per cent of the people of Edo State” with Shaibu’s defection.
