Petroleum marketers demand transparency from Dangote Refinery regarding its petrol price.

The marketers are seeking disclosure of the price at which Dangote Refinery sold petrol to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

According to the President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, “Dangote Refinery should tell us what price it is selling its petrol since NNPCL has given its selling price. We should know exactly what price that is coming from Dangote Refinery Petrol to us.”

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) President, Abubakar Maigandi, also expressed displeasure with the conflicting petrol pricing from Dangote Refinery and NNPCL. “We are waiting for NNPCL to release prices that independent marketers will be buying petrol. They have not,” he said.

The marketers are concerned that the country cannot depend solely on domestic petrol production to satisfy its daily consumption, which stands at 50 million liters according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s latest data. Gillis-Harry noted, “Dangote Refinery is producing about 25 million liters a day. That is just about 15,000 metric tonnes which is less than one cargo.”

The development has sparked fears of a potential fuel price hike, as marketers may be forced to import petrol to meet the demand.

The situation has been described as “standing in limbo” by Gillis-Harry, emphasizing the need for transparency in the oil and gas sector.
