Plateau State has declared Tuesday a work-free day to mark its 2023 Forgiveness Day.

Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Dan Manjang, made the announcement in a statement he issued in Jos on Monday.

He stated that Gov. Simon Lalong gave approval for the holiday to enable the people of the state to celebrate the day.

The state held an interdenominational service at St. Monica Catholic Church, Jos, on Sunday to mark Plateau Forgiveness Day.

The celebration, held annually on Feb. 7, was conceived as part of efforts to continue the restoration of peace on the Plateau.

It was also conceived to remind the younger generation that the state is home to peace, hospitality, and tourism.

The Day of Forgiveness unveiled and launched by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 is held to strengthen the peace processes in the state.

It aims at coordinating and implementing efforts to remove toxic narratives, crisis merchandising, and violence, and tackle the root causes of disharmony and intolerance on the Plateau.

“In this light, therefore, citizens of Plateau are called upon to turn out en-masse on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to participate in this epoch-making event,’’ Manjang stated. (NAN)
