The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has suspended the planned enforcement of the e-Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) which was scheduled to commence on July 29.

The suspension is to allow for mass enlightenment and education of the public on the benefits and effectiveness of the e-CMR.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, “The I-G has ordered an immediate suspension of the e-CMR enforcement to give ample opportunity for mass enlightenment and education of the public on the process, benefits, and effectiveness of e-CMR.” He added that the police spokesman urged police officers to desist from requesting e-CMR certificates, warning that officers found extorting or exploiting the public would be sanctioned.

The e-CMR is designed to address vehicle-related crimes and protection of individual and corporate vehicle ownership. Adejobi explained that the registration would help collate data on vehicle owners and flag stolen vehicles. “The e-CMR will provide a firsthand database to the Force for curbing vehicular crimes as dedicated officers can access real-time comprehensive data of every vehicle on their tablets.”Police IG Suspends e-CMR Enforcement, Cites Need for Public Enlightenment
