Popular Cardiologist, Nowa Omoigui, Dies At 62

A foremost Nigerian-born US cardiologist and essayist, Dr Nowa Austin Omoigui, is dead.

He was for many years a columnist and essayist for Nigerian publications contributing mostly politics and governance in Nigeria, aside his full time vocation as a medical doctor.

His family announced the death in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the joint statement by Omoigui and Asemota family, the late Omoigui died on April 18, 2021.

The deceased was described as a “pre-eminent interventional cardiologist in Columbia, South Carolina and foremost Nigerian civil-military and Benin historian.”

The statement said: “The family of Surveyor Daniel Aiyanyo Omoigui of the Egite family, Isi in Uhunmwode LGA, Edo State and the entire Egite family of the Edo kingdom and Barr. Mrs Grace Onaiwu Omoigui nee Asemota (late) and the entire Asemota family of Ogbe Quarters, Oredo LGA, Edo State are heartbroken as we announce the passing of our dearly beloved son, husband, father, brother, in-law, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend – Dr. Nowamagbe Austin Omoigui MD, MPH, FACC.

“He is survived by his wife Mrs. Moira Omoigui nee Aghahowa, their children (Ikponmwosa Omoigui, Ighiwiyisi Omoigui, Iyegbekosa (Egbe) Omoigui & Izevbokun (Izzy) Omoigui, Iyare Omoigui and Iriagbonse Omoigui), his father, Surveyor Daniel Aiyanyo Omoigui and his four siblings – Dr. Sota Omoigui, Ifueko M Omoigui Okauru, Eghosa Omoigui and Nosa Omoigui, their spouses and children.

“We are immensely grateful to God for the life he lived, the service he gave to family and country, and most importantly, his love, care for, and devotion to his wife, children, family and friends. We are also thankful to all those that supported him in health and in sickness.”

Although his burial rites will begin on May 5, his remains will be interred on May 15, 2021.

The statement added: “COVID 19 protocols will be strictly enforced for your health and safety please.”

Among the relative of the deceased is a former Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru.
