They sent a save-our-soul appeal to the government, to rescue them from the consistent onslaught of cultists and land grabbers.

One of the community elders, Lateef Orelade, affirmed that life has not remained the same for residents, because they are still traumatised by the growing boldness of the land-grabbers in their attacks.

Orelade said, “What we are witnessing here are cultists and hoodlums that have ganged up with the sole aim of sacking us from our ancestral lands.

“The Orelade/ Ladera Royal Family are the true owners of Gberigbe. But then we started having a plethora of cases in court challenging our ownership.

“In 2010 the cases were decided in our favour at the High Court. But these land grabbers act as if they are above the law.

“They are our customary tenants, but they have now ganged up, to launch series of bloody attacks to sack us from our lands.

“We have been writing series of petitions to the police. But these hoodlums are backed by very powerful elements. So most times these hoodlums even attack and overpower policemen too.”

Also, Fatai Adedeji another resident attributed the brazen attacks of the land grabbers to the seeming lack of will to arrest and prosecute the personalities fuelling the mayhem in the Gberigbe community.

“Most of us in the community know the person that attacked and killed three men, plus the police on Saturday night. They are well known here. And severally we have petitioned government over the nefarious activities of these land grabbers, but our cries are never adhered to,” he said.

Another resident, Muyiwa Olaiwola said  though t they have noticed intermittent patrol of policemen, many residents still live in fear of reprisal attacks.

“I’ve been indoors with my family since after the killings. Many residents are afraid the friends and family of the two ‘omo oniles’ that were killed may still plan to avenge by attacking the people sponsoring these hoodlums,” Olaiwola said.
