There has never been a better time to get seasoned academics to offer solutions to the problems facing our tertiary institutions, given the growing issues of poor funding, corruption, inadequate infrastructure, a lack of academic staff, brain drain, subpar research, weak governance, and insecurity, among other issues. In light of this, the former vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Tolu Odugbemi and Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, released a thought-provoking book titled “A Practical Approach To Contemporary Tertiary Education Management In Nigeria.”
Drawing on Prof. Odugbemi’s vast experience in the subject of education management, the book provides a thorough and perceptive guide to successful education management practices in Nigeria and beyond.
In a formal ceremony held at UNILAG on Tuesday, Professor Tolu Odugbemi, was eulogised by colleagues, students, and distinguished guests, for his latest literary contribution to the realm of education management.
The book,  co-edited by Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, is a culmination of years of research and practical experience in the field, and it promises to be a valuable resource for educators, administrators, and policymakers alike.
During the unveiling, Professor Odugbemi emphasised the critical need for practical and adaptable management approaches in the ever-evolving landscape of education. He highlighted the importance of fostering innovation, collaboration, and strategic planning to address the multifaceted challenges faced by educational institutions today.
To him, our schools from primary level to the tertiary level need to be fully equipped with comfortable infrastructure while teachers and all categories of workers  are paid salaries and allowances comparable to modern countries that value humans and education.
He said, “Issues relating to making education relevant to the society occupy my mind and those of my allies. It is not good to be only preoccupied with grumbling and complaints on the country not doing well but with little positive inputs, appreciating values of civic and ethnics, we can jointly turn things around positively. Our educational institutions should be directed at solving our peculiar problems in our own objective and sincere ways.”
The book ‘A Practical Approach To Contemporary Tertiary Education Management In Nigeria’ delves into a wide array of topics, including leadership dynamics, curriculum development, student engagement, resource allocation, and the integration of technology in educational settings. The book offers a balanced blend of theoretical frameworks and real-world case studies, providing readers with actionable insights and best practices.
Over 25 eminent scholars from different institutions across Nigeria contributed to the book. According the former VC, it is an administrative and academic fulfilment , a landmark project based on unity, respect for humanity and dignity of labour.
Professor Odugbemi expressed hope that the book would serve as a catalyst for meaningful discourse and positive change within the educational community.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by faculty members, students, and education professionals, all of whom lauded Professor Odugbemi’s unwavering commitment to advancing the field of education management.
Speaking at the book, the chief host, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor described Professor Odugbemi as a mentor in academics and administration. She urged the government authorities to imbibe all that has been captured in the book. “Professor Odugbemi never does anything by mistake. In education management Prof has seen it all, so he is the best person to write on it.
“So this book would be an important guide to anyone that is interested in education management, especially now that a lot is happening in our tertiary schools,” the VC added.
Another dignitary from the West African College of Physicians, lauded Professor Odugbemi efforts and contribution in the field of education, administration and research. “Prof was a principal officer of the college and has his mark not only in university administration but also in post graduate studies in Africa. So this book is a great tool for those that want to know the inner workings of university administration.”
The General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Dr Daniel Olukoya, who was acknowledged as sponsoring the production and publication of the book project, also attended the event.
