COVID-19: Lagos schools remain shut indefinitely, says education ministry

The ministry of Education has said Lagos schools remain closed indefinitely.

The ministry made the clarification  as Sunday as some states announced plans to reopen their schools on Monday, January 4, for the second term.

Lagos State had also earlier fixed  resumption of the second term for 4th of January.

However, following the spike in cases of COVID-19, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered closure of all schools in the state indefinitely.

The governor also directed all public servants from Grade Level 14 and below, except emergency workers and first responders, to work from home for the next 14 days starting from Monday, December 21, in the first instance.

Head, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr Kayode Abayomi,  explained on Sunday  that schools in the state are not reopening on Monday, January 4, 2021, as earlier announced.

The  ministry of Education said  though it  had earlier announced  4th of January as resumption date for the second term  of 2020/2021 academic session ,” this has since been overtaken by  the turn of events due to the recent waves of COVID-19 Pandemic.

“As a result of this, Mr Governor announced the indefinite closure of all schools,” he said.

According to him, the second wave of COVID-19 would be a major determinant for the reopening of schools in the state.

He said, “Please, recall that the Ministry of Education earlier announced 4th of January as resumption date for the second term 2020/2021 academic session, but this has since been overtaken by the turn of events due to the recent waves of Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a result of the spike in Coronavirus pandemic, Mr. Governor announced the indefinite closure of all schools. To this end, kindly be informed that a new date of resumption will be announced as soon as possible.”
