In a recent discussion on AF24 News, panellists Dr. Olabisi Deji-Folutile and Dr. Olayinka Oyegbile addressed the ongoing conflict between the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the federal government regarding impending strikes. The discussion revolved around the government’s response, the demands of the NLC, and the overall situation for Nigerian workers.

Dr. Deji-Folutile, the Executive Director at AF24 News, expressed scepticism about the ongoing labour dispute. She noted that the government does not seem to take the workers’ union seriously, and there is a visible division within the labour union itself, with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) opting out of previous strikes. Dr. Deji-folutile emphasized the importance of collective bargaining and advocated for the NLC to fight for improved conditions for Nigerian workers.

Dr Oyegbile, the Editor of AF24 News, echoed concerns about the government’s response. He pointed out the government’s call for patience from workers while it had not demonstrated patience when making decisions, such as removing fuel subsidies.  Oyegbile also criticized the government’s palliative measures, describing them as insufficient and not addressing the core issues faced by Nigerian workers.

Both panellists agreed that the NLC should focus on immediate demands, such as improved infrastructure, affordable transportation, and tax reduction. Olabisi stressed the urgency of addressing the devaluation of the Nigerian Naira, which erodes the value of workers’ salaries.

In response to a question about the government’s eight-week panel to address the issues, Dr Oyegbile expressed doubt about the panel’s effectiveness, given the lack of progress over the past four months. He suggested that the NLC had given the government sufficient time to act and warned that if no resolution was reached within the next four days, the NLC would proceed with the strike.

The discussion highlighted the frustration among Nigerian workers and the need for concrete actions from the government to address their demands. The fate of the impending strike remains uncertain as both parties continue their negotiations.
