A woman was rescued on Friday afternoon as a three-storey building collapsed in the Ebute-Metta area of Lagos.

The building, which caved in on Friday afternoon, is located directly opposite the health centre along Cemetery Street and opposite Ebute Metta Comprehensive Centre. It housed shops and other residential apartments.

The Director General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the rescued woman has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

This is happening barely two weeks after a three-storey building collapsed on a bungalow at Freeman Street, Lagos Island, killing a policewoman and two children. Residents said the casualty was low because it happened in the afternoon, a time many had gone out for their businesses.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the cause of the building collapse was yet to be determined, adding that the area had been cordoned off to prevent secondary disaster.

He said buildings adjacent to the collapsed structure were also being examined for possible damages by material testing agency.

The state government recently sealed off 42 buildings in some parts of the sate over non-adherence to proper planning.
