We have chanced upon a throwback photo of the late boxing legend, Muhammed Ali when he visited Nigeria.

He was in Nigeria on a three-day tour that started on June 1 and ended on June 3 in the year 1964. The photo was shared on the popular Nigerian Instagram blog, yoruba_blog.

He was seen in the photo surrounded by many Nigerian children who were obviously his fans and the video was shared with the caption;

“On one of his trips to Africa, Muhammad Ali visited Lagos, Nigeria on a 3-day tour of the city from June 1- June 3, 1964. Dressed in the traditional Aso Oke agbada regalia, he was warmly welcomed to the country which had just become a republic, a year before. #yorubablog”

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in 1942, he converted to Islam in the year 1961 and changed his name to Muhammed Ali.

He was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. He began training as an amateur boxer at age 12. At 18, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics and turned professional later that year.

He is nicknamed The Greatest as he is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sporting figures of the 20th century, and frequently ranked as the best heavyweight boxer and greatest athlete of the century.

He died on June 3, 2016 after making a name for himself in the world of boxing and other areas of his life.
