A heartbreaking incident has shaken the northeastern Zambezi Region of Namibia, where four children aged 3-6 suffocated after becoming trapped in an old, unused freezer ¹. The children, who were playing inside the deep freezer, accidentally locked themselves in, unable to escape due to a latch that could only be opened from the outside.

According to eyewitness accounts, one of the fathers, Aranges Shoro, described the horrific scene: “One of the other parents came looking for the children and saw their shoes next to the fridge. When they opened it, they found the children inside the freezer.” Two children were found dead at the scene, while the other two were rushed to Katima Mulilo State Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Zambezi regional police commander Andreas Shilelo confirmed that the children suffocated after being locked inside for approximately an hour and a half. “There was a hook on the freezer that could only be opened from the outside. They were stuck… and suffocated,” he said.

The incident raises concerns about the accessibility of the non-functional appliance, which had been left outside one of the affected families’ homes without proper securing or removal.

Namibian authorities are currently investigating the tragedy to determine the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths. As the community mourns the loss of these young lives, questions linger about preventable measures that could have avoided this devastating outcome.
