UI, seven other tertiary institutions to participate in SOWEGA 2021

Eight tertiary institutions have so far indicated interest in participating in the forthcoming South West Games also known as SOWEGA 2021 that is billed to be hosted by Ogun State in the month of July 2021, he chairman, the Central Working Committee, has said.
According to the chairman, South West Games (SOWEGA) Ogun 2021, Dr Babatunde Olokun, the eight schools are the University of Ibadan, Tai Solaarin University of Education, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Yaba College of Technology, Federal University Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State University, Osun State University and Olabisi Onabanjo University. More are still expected to join the train.
Olokun said the games lined up for the proposed annual games between tertiary institutions in the South West of Nigeria include Ayo Olopon, football, Table Tennis, basketball, golf, swimming, taekwondo, track and field events among others.
According to him, the inclusion of Ayo Olopon is a deliberate attempt to also revive more of our popular traditional games in the future
The initiative is coming at a time when there is practically no season of games to foster harmony and friendship among our youths as it used to be in the past with such instance as NUGA games or even Principal’s Cup.

He said, “In organising these events, SOWEGA is reiterating it core values of positioning sports as the special purpose vehicle (SPV) for achieving zonal developments and deepening the integration of people of the zone.
He explained that SOWEGA provides constant avenue for inculcating the intrinsic value of sportsmanship in the youth and utilizing  their abundant energy while developing healthy lifestyle to promote the spirit of leadership, team work and the value of striving to achieve set goals and meeting aspirations through hard work.
He said it will also enable the youths  to display sport talents that may be economically viable to them in the world of sport professionalism.
