The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has cancelled the Guinness World Record programme that was scheduled to hold in the institution from March 21 over the spread of Corona virus.

The programme, Guinness World Record Hackathon innovation on Renewable Energy, was to feature 5,000 students participating in technology training across Kwara State.

The Director of UNILORIN Renewable Energy Centre (UREC), Prof. Joshua Olaoye, said the cancellation followed the directive of the government to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the programme was postponed till further notice. According to him, gathering 5,000 students in a single venue negates the current Federal Government of Nigeria’s campaign against public gathering of more than 50 people.

He said, “Information gathered from our foreign partners and their government agencies, Guinness World Record (GWR), HackathonTech Challenge and Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) had clearly indicated that gathering of 50 or more people should be cancelled for eight weeks.

“Against these aforementioned issues, UREC, therefore, wishes to announce the indefinite postponement of our programme, World Record project and Hackathon TechChallenge, tagged: Kwara-UNILORIN Innovation Hackathon.”
