Victimised Lecturers Day: ASUU Demands Improved Varsity System

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for an improved university system in Nigeria, as it marked the 2024 Victimised Lecturers Day.

The union condemned the victimisation of its members in some public universities, including Lagos State University, Ojo; Kogi State University, Anyingba; and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

In a statement jointly issued by Dr E.C. Chinakwe and Dr C.E Ihejirika, ASUU-FUTO said: “We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who are facing victimisation in some Nigerian public universities.

This is consistent with the National Executive Council’s resolution, which was made during its meeting on August 17 and 18, 2024, at the University of Ibadan, designating September 10, 2024, as Victimised Lecturers Day in Nigeria.”

The union expressed concern over the cruel treatment of its members, including unlawful dismissal, suspension from duty, denial of rights, and harassment. “We openly express our solidarity with colleagues at Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos; Kogi State University, Anyingba; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; and others so affected,” the statement added.

ASUU-FUTO called on the relevant authorities and regulatory bodies to intervene and resolve the issues at stake. “We implore the visitors to these universities to take further actions aimed at resolving the issues at stake and ensure that there is harmony between the university administration and all the trade unions in these establishments,” the statement said.

The union reiterated its commitment to the improvement of the university system in Nigeria. “We remain committed to the improvement of the university system in Nigeria,” the statement said.
