WASSCE, NECO candidates to know fate after lockdown

Candidates sitting for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations organized by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) would be informed of examination dates after the lockdown is lifted.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr Emeka Nwajiuba, made this announcement on Tuesday during the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 daily press briefing in Abuja.

According to Nwajiuba, both exams were postponed indefinitely over the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, and the ministry would make known the new examination dates as soon as the lockdown is declared over.

Nwajiuba further stated that the ministry was working on how school would be reopened after the lockdown, adding that nobody could reopen school except it was ordered by the Ministry of Education.

He added that the ministry was working with the Universal Basic Education (UBEC) and the State Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to enable pupils learn through online platforms, and as well working with NTA and Radio Nigeria to provide educational contents.

He confirmed 15 states including Lagos and Anambra to have already commenced learning through radio in accordance with approved standard, adding that some tertiary institutions have also started lectures online. “We are working with any stakeholders that can support our plans by providing platform for our students to learn,” he said.

Access to the internet by some category of pupils was pointed out as the major challenge, of which the ministry intended tackling through terrestrial platforms.
