Anu Okasanya, a 46-year-old care home worker from Nigeria, has died following complications from an asthma attack while fleeing a group of youths in Newry, Ireland.

The group had previously attacked her home twice, and Anu collapsed while running to a neighbour’s house after witnessing them assault another individual.

Anu had moved to Newry 15 months ago and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her only son, Olaitan, 25, who was due to join her next week.

Her family, including her brother Gbenga who lives in Ireland too, told The Irish News: “Her son was her world, and they were supposed to reunite next week. Now, instead of a reunion, he will be burying his mother.”

Anu had been a dedicated care worker and was described by her brother as caring and hardworking.

Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes and local authorities have expressed condolences, with police confirming that Anu had no direct involvement in the altercation but tragically collapsed after fleeing the scene.

Local police performed CPR and used a defibrillator in an attempt to save her life, but Anu passed away days later in the hospital.
