The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the arrest of the Accountant-General of the Federation for fraud only proves that IPPIS is also a fraud.

Ahmed Idris was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday over N80billion fraud.

The Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) is the official payroll platform of the federal government of Nigeria.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 for reasons including the change of the government lecturer’s payment platform from IPPIS to the Universities Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS)

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke while speaking to newsmen said the Accountant General’s case should not be covered up, maintaining that IPPIS is a fraud that has encouraged corruption rather than helped in controlling it.

“We have said it over and over again that IPPIS is a fraud. We’ve also said that the Accountant-General office is a fraud, and they are using IPPIS to relocate all the fraud activities to one centre, which is the Accountant-General Office and we have been vindicated. That’s our position,” Osodeke said.

He added that “corrupt persons deserve punishment in line with Buhari’s administration’s vision.

“This IPPIS, I can tell you as we speak, that many of our members have not been paid for 13 months, 8 months, 9 months, but they’re telling the government that they are using it to control corruption.”
