Several documents have been destroyed as fire guts the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja.
The fire which started just before noon on Friday gutted some parts of the building in Abuja’s Maitama neighbourhood.
However, INEC’s Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said the documents destroyed were not sensitive as the inferno was restricted to the office of the director of elections and party monitoring.
Confirming the fire outbreak, Osaze-Uzzi said, “Yes, there was a fire incident. Fortunately, we have a fire unit in the office. It was put out. Some equipment and correspondence were affected. But no sensitive material was affected. Some photocopies of documents and computers were destroyed.”
”He said the source of the fire was being investigated.
The fire incident came barely a week after a massive fire broke out at the Ministry of Finance in Abuja.
