Liverpool legend John Arne Riise said he is ‘scared’ the club could be set for a repeat of the 2020/21 season should injuries start to mount up.

Liverpool could not retain their Premier League title and even managed to finish top four and Riise is worried the same may happen this season and stop them challenging Manchester City and Chelsea.

Prior to the 3-2 defeat to David Moyes’ West Ham, Liverpool were looking very comfortable with 25-match unbeaten run.

“I was a little bit worried in the beginning because I didn’t think we replaced [Gini] Wijnaldum who I think was extremely important for Liverpool,” Riise told talkSPORT.

“I’m really concerned about the depth in the squad, I don’t think they have the top, top, top class players.

“Like last season when we lost [Virgil] Van Dijk and then a few other players you can see we struggled and I’m scared it could be the same again this year.

“Could be injured, suspension, Africa Cup of Nations when we lose some players [Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita], I’m a little bit worried that’s when the title is going to be decided.

“I don’t think we are strong enough depth wise to compete in the long run with Manchester City or Chelsea.”
