The Federal Government has accredited eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic for Nigerian students, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman has said.

This development comes after an investigation revealed that over 22,500 Nigerians obtained fake degree certificates from universities in the two countries.

Mamman made this known on Sunday night while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program. He listed three universities in Togo and five in Benin Republic as the federal government-approved institutions to offer degree programs for students from Nigeria.

The accredited universities in Togo are Universite De Lome, Universite De Kara, and Catholic University of West Africa. In Benin Republic, the accredited universities are Universite D’abomey-Calavi, Universite De Parakou, Universite Nationale Des Sciences, Technologis Ingenierie Et Mathematiques, Universite Nationale D’Agriculture, and Universite Africaine De Development Cooperatif.

Mamman insisted that the federal government would cancel about 22,700 certificates awarded to Nigerians by some “fake” universities in neighboring Togo and Benin Republic.

He maintained that the decision to invalidate the certificates was not harsh, as Nigerians who obtained degree certificates from such “illegal” tertiary institutions dent the country’s image.
