FG Reacts to Removal of UNILAG Vice chancellor, Ogundipe

The Federal Ministry of Education has reacted to the removal  of the vice chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, from office by the Governing Council of the institution headed by Dr Babawale Babalakin.

The vice chancellor was removed on Wednesday by the governing council at its emergency meeting held at the National Universities Commission in Abuja.

However, shortly after his removal, the vice chancellor issued a counter statement, asking the public to ignore the announcement by the institution’s Registrar on his removal.

Reacting, the Federal Government, through the Spokesperson for the Education ministry,   Ben Goong, in a statement in Abuja, said the ministry had not been briefed on the  removal of Vice-Chancellor.

Goong however said that the council has the power to hire and fire a Vice-Chancellor. The statement also insisted that due process must be followed in doing so.

The statement read in part: “My dear colleagues, the Federal Ministry of Education wishes to state that it is yet to be briefed on the developments at the University of Lagos regarding the purported removal of the VC.

“While the ministry awaits the proper briefing from the university authorities, it is important to reaffirm that council has the power to hire and fire but that due process must be followed in doing so.”
