Random kidnapping and cultism are the main security concerns facing Ogun State, according to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Abiodun stated this on Wednesday in his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where he was hosting the new Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Johnson Kokumo.

“The main difficulties we have now in Ogun State are random kidnapping and cult activities,” the governor admitted.

“With the united efforts of the Nigerian Police Force, the State Security Services, and the Nigerian Army, I believe that cult activities have now subsided.

“However, we are still suffering and dealing with concerns relating to contractor abduction , farmers and innocent citizens .

“We really hope that as our partnership progresses, we will work together to guarantee that this occurrence of kidnapping is reduced to zero.”

He said the many federal highways in Ogun, made monitoring  of criminal activity on the roadways to require  a large amount of staff and equipment.

The governor praised the Police Force’s Air Wing for its assistance in combating criminal activity, including kidnapping.

The Army, through its General Officer Commanding (GOC), has promised to assist the state by deploying tracking technology to locate kidnappers, according to Abiodun.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on the other hand, was commended by Abiodun for sanctioning the use of a Nigeria Police aircraft that has been functioning in the state and providing air surveillance.

“Using that helicopter substantially aided us in lowering the response time to kidnap cases and, as a result, minimizing kidnap instances,” he stated.

“Each time we receive a distress call on any of the Ogun locations, whether from Yewa, meaning Imeko, Ipokia, all the way to Ogun Waterside or Ijebu-Igbo, the helicopter was able to respond quickly to the distress calls while your men moved in, ensuring that the kidnappers were not able to leave the immediate corridor before the men arrived,” he said.

Kidnapping has reportedly become a’money-making activity’ for bandits in Ogun State in recent months, according to reports.

Unknown gunmen have recently abducted expats, medical personnel, students, farmers, traditional chiefs, and a large number of citizens of the state.

It was also revealed that ransoms in the millions of naira had been paid to obtain the release of kidnap victims, despite the fact that two police officers had died in gun engagements with the kidnappers.
