The conflict in the Middle East intensified on Tuesday as Iran launched hundreds of ballistic missiles targeting various locations across Israel, including its capital, Tel Aviv.

The Israeli military confirmed the missile strikes, stating, “A short while ago, missiles were launched from Iran to Israel.”

While Israel’s Iron Dome defense system intercepted some of the incoming missiles, several others struck densely populated areas, triggering air raid sirens throughout the country, including in major cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Residents reported hearing loud explosions as the air defense systems engaged.

This missile attack is reportedly in retaliation for the recent assassinations of key figures, including Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, and an Iranian commander, as stated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps. Iran has issued warnings of further missile strikes should it face additional attacks.

The escalation follows a rare ground invasion by Israeli forces into southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia that has long been in conflict with Israel.

In response, Hezbollah launched missile strikes against Israeli positions, including the Glilot base near Tel Aviv, which houses the headquarters of Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.

U.S. officials have shown strong support for Israel amid these developments. A senior White House official emphasized that any direct attack on Israel would lead to “severe consequences for Iran.”

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris convened urgent meetings with national security officials to devise strategies for supporting Israel and safeguarding American personnel in the region.

In response to the escalating tensions, the U.S. has begun mobilizing additional military forces to the Middle East, with thousands of troops being deployed to reinforce the 40,000 already stationed there.

The situation remains volatile, with ongoing threats exchanged between Iran and Israel. The Israeli military has called up extra reserve brigades to strengthen its northern border and is conducting airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, raising the specter of a broader regional conflict.

This latest round of violence comes in the wake of the targeted killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last weekend, an act that has drawn global attention and heightened fears of retaliatory actions from Iran.
