Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has described the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy as a distraction from the more pressing issues facing the country.
In a video released on Saturday, Makinde emphasised the need to address the underlying problems of productivity, hunger, and anger in Nigeria.
He said in part, “The judgment of the Supreme Court , there is local government autonomy, financial autonomy, and all of that, and I will still say it, I think it’s just a distraction.
“We must face the real issues that we have . The issue that we have is that we are not producing enough. We are not productive.”
Yes, maybe that can make us have value for what is shared but I still say it’s a distraction. Nigeria cannot feed itself, it’s a shame.
“We really need to work, regain the confidence of the people, that’s the real issue not LG autonomy,” he further explained
The Supreme Court in a landmark judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim on behalf of a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court ruled that the 774 local government councils in Nigeria should receive their allocation directly from the federation account.
