This, he said, would complement the welfare package from their various private employers, even as he charged state governments in the country to include private school teachers in their professional development programmes for the benefit of the Nigerian learners.

He noted that the coronavirus pandemic has severely affected Nigeria’s education sector, adding that the situation was worsened by virtue of the fact that the private education sub-sector is a big player in the education sector in Nigeria.

He observed that the resultant effect of the school closure due to imposition of lockdown in the bid to contain the virus affected the income of private schools and by extension, private school teachers in Nigeria since private schools largely depend on school fees as their major source of school income which unfortunately got adversely affected due to the lockdown.

He said,  “There is no doubt many teachers/ school administrators are not much in the mood to celebrate teacher’s day especially for this year due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic which took the world by surprise and Nigeria inclusive.

“The resultant effect of this pandemic has reshaped the way we do things with over 1.2 billion children worldwide reported to be out of the classrooms in the wake of the pandemic. This situation has eventually given rise to remote learning as the alternative means of teaching and learning to contain the spread of the Coronavirus infection within the school environment.”

He however said that teachers should be treated comfortably to enable them to settle to their jobs as no society could achieve any meaningful development without the input of teachers.

His words: “No society can achieve meaningful development in delivering quality education without placing premium value on its teachers. This suggests to me that considering teachers roles, contributions and importance, our teachers must be treated comfortably to settle to their job roles.

“Therefore, teacher welfare package should be a major priority for school owners, administrators and indeed governments if the education sector still hopes to retain the best in the teaching profession.

“I encourage our school owners to also prioritize welfare package programme for private school teachers. Teachers must be made to enjoy the rewards for their labour first here on earth.

“In repositioning private schools for optimal performance in the digital age, school owners are encouraged to deploy technology-driven teaching & learning template, upscale regular training of teachers as well as create a conducive teaching and learning environment in their various schools.”
