From being that little 12-year-old boy that was denied admission to one of Nigeria’s unity schools in 2002 despite scoring  524 in the qualifying test, Oyindamola Olaoye has bagged a doctorate degree.  He was one of the scholars produced at the last convocation of Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti this last week.

It was a moment of joy as Oyindamola spoke of  his journey from primary school to his  current academic achievement that was nearly cut short when he was denied admission to Kings College despite being qualified to emerge the best graduating PhD student of ABUAD in 2023.

The young Oyindamola could not understand why his name was missing on the admission list despite his stellar performances in school and his hard work that gave him a good mark in the qualification exam into Nigeria’s unity school.

Confused, he stopped eating. As young as he was, he had the courage to protest his non-admission and wrote the minister of education to investigate why his name was not included in the admission list. He insisted that he did well.

Fast forward to 2023, Oyindamola was among the PhD graduates of ABUAD.

According to him, he was able to overcome his low moments and gained admission to ABUAD for his first degree. He graduated with a first class in Bio-Chemistry.

His academic excellence did not go unnoticed as his Head of Department encouraged him to pursue further studies and return to the university immediately after his youth service at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan.

Following his mentor’s advice, Olaoye obtained his Masters degree and was subsequently employed by the university as an assistant lecturer.

His hard work and dedication paid off as he earned his doctorate degree.

Olaoye’s academic achievements serve as an inspiration unto many young Nigerians who aspire to excel in their academic pursuits with his story of doggedness and pressing forward in spite of difficulties.
