A tragic incident occurred in Gurin, a suburb of Fufore Local Government Area in Adamawa state, where a boat capsized, resulting in the feared death of many passengers.
The victims, mostly women and children, were returning from farms and a naming ceremony when the wooden boat sank on September 11, 2023.
This unfortunate event follows another boat mishap that claimed the lives of eight individuals in Rugange, Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa, just 48 hours prior.
Dr. Mohammed Suleiman, the Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the incident, stating that it took place in the afternoon and that rescue efforts were currently underway.
Hon. Barr. Umar Bobbo Ismail, the member representing Fufore/Gurin constituency at the Adamawa State House of Assembly, also verified the tragic incident.
One of the local divers involved in the rescue operation, Mahmud, expressed his belief that the incident could have been prevented if the passengers had utilized life jackets and adhered to other necessary safety measures.
He urged the government and relevant authorities to prioritize regular maintenance of waterways and the provision of safety equipment, such as life jackets, to prevent future mishaps.
The recent resurgence of boat mishaps has raised concerns about the safety of water transportation, particularly during the rainy season.
