The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has claimed he has received death threats due to his fight against corruption since he assumed office.

He said this on Tuesday while fielding questions on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme.

Bawa, 40, said that he received a death threat last week, retelling how somebody had placed a phone call to deliver the threat.

“Last week, I was in New York, as all Nigerians are aware of. A very senior citizen received a phone call from somebody that is not even under investigation. What he (the caller) said to him on the phone is that; he is going to kill the EFCC chairman, the young man.

“He said, ‘I am going to kill him. I am going to kill him’. This is to tell you how bad it is. It is actually real. Corruption can fight back,” Bawa said, recounting the incident.

President Muhammadu Buhari had, in February 2021, Bawa as the new EFCC chairman, replacing embattled ex-acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu who is being accused of fraud.

Since Bawa was sworn into office, the anti-graft agency has called in influential members of the political elite for questioning.

Most infamously, former Imo Governor Rochas Okorocha was, in April, brought into the agency’s headquarters in Jabi District, Abuja. According to Rochas’ team, the agency only investigated Okorocha’s activities as an ex-governor of Imo following a petition written by another ex-governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha.
