The United Kingdom government is ready to pay the sum of 3,000 pounds ($3,836) to all asylum seekers up to to move to Rwanda voluntarily.
This step is taken to help clear the backlog of refugees who have had their applications to remain in the country rejected, the government said.
The new arrangement with Rwanda is distinct from the government’s halted proposal to forcefully deport the majority of asylum seekers to the East African country, which was declared illegal by the UK Supreme Court last year.
Instead, it parallels an existing government policy in which asylum seekers are provided financial support to leave Britain for their native country; however, under the new scheme, applicants will only receive the money if they agree to remain in Rwanda.
Kevin Hollinrake, a junior business minister, said on Wednesday that the new policy was a sensible use of public funds because it was less expensive than caring for those in Britain who had been granted asylum but had yet to be deported.
There are tens of thousands of asylum seekers in Britain who have been refused asylum, but they cannot be removed because the government is not allowed to return people to a war-torn country or one with a poor human rights record.
“So, 3,000 pounds, of course that’s a lot of money, but nevertheless, it costs a lot of money to keep people in the UK who are failed asylum seekers,” Hollinrake was quoted by Reuters.
