President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris called the family of the deceased George Floyd following the verdict announcement in the trial against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

Chauvin was declared guilty on all charged counts. This means Chauvin was deemed culpable on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, and third-degree murder. Chauvin is yet to be sentenced, but he faces a minimum of 29 years behind bars.

Shortly after the verdict was announced, Biden could be heard on a call with George Floyd’s family.

“Feeling better now. Nothing is going to make it all better, but at least now there is some justice,” he said.

Biden also made a reference to a comment that Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, had made. The young Gianna was quoted saying, “my dad is going to change the world.”

Biden said that he had been watching the verdict along with Harris and senior adviser Cedric Richmond, and stated that he and the rest of his team were “relieved” by the verdict.

“We are all so relieved — not just one verdict but all three, guilty on all three counts,” he said.

The President also took to his Twitter account to encourage citizens of America to continue to fight for social justice.

“‘I can’t breathe’.  Those were George Floyd’s last words. We cannot let them die with him. We have to keep hearing them. We must not turn away. We cannot turn away,” POTUS said.
