Facts have emerged on why northern governors of the All Progressives Congress insisted on Southern Presidency.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has on Friday evening revealed that 12 out of 14 governors of the northern region kicked against the northern presidency and insisted to  President Muhammadu Buhari that the next president of Nigeria must come from the South.
El-Rufai made this clear when he appeared in a televised interview with Channels Television.
Speaking on the northern insistence on Southern Presidency, Governor El-Rufai said: “Northern politicians don’t go back on their words. That’s why APC Northern Governors backed a Southern Presidency.”
” When we heard that the APC Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu had announced the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan as the consensus candidate. We were all confused.”
“We went to the president to ask him when things have suddenly changed since he earlier said he has so candidate.
Buhari had however earlier stated that he had a favourite whom he wouldn’t disclose.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai further said that the president, “then asked that five names should be submitted among which were: Bola Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State, David Umahi, Governor of Ebonyi State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice President and Senate President Ahmed Lawan.”
The following day, El-Rufai said, “I went to the president by myself to ask who is the anointed one for presidency, but he said we should go to the primaries.”
“Twelve out of fourteen governors insisted on Southern Presidency, two other who didn’t support the motion are Yahaya Bello and that because he decided to run by himself, the other governor who didn’t support was because he was supporting Lawal.
” We were actually at crossroads when the Peoples Democratic Party PDP came up with a northern candidate, Atiku Abubakar, but we had to stand by our words of 2013.”
“We thought that it would be unfair to other regions if another northern president emerged after eight years of Muhammadu Buhari.”
Governor El-Rufai concluded with the remark”Northern politicians don’t go back on their words. That’s why APC Northern Governors backed a Southern Presidency.”
