Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, has explained the reason behind his unusual love for education, teachers and the people.

Recall that the governor once paid a surprise visit to a school as early as 6.30am.   During the visit, he had an encounter with a level 12 class teacher, Mrs Obiagelli Mazi of Shehu Sanda Kyarimi 2 Primary School. The teacher was later promoted to the position of an Assistant Headmistress as a reward for her diligence at work.

He said, “I trekked 7km daily to school in Borno’s Mafa town. Daily, I also trekked 7km to help my father, a peasant farmer.

“I used this to pay sec sch. fees. I drove taxi for 15 years (1984-99) to support my ND & higher before teaching.”

The governor has been a victim of multiple attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in his efforts to ensure a speedy end to insurgency in the state and the resettlement of the displaced people in their communities.

The latest of the attack happened on Sunday, September 27, along the Monguno-Maiduguri axis of the state. The attack occurred while the convoy of the governor was reportedly returning from Monguno; about 80km drive from Maiduguri, the capital of the state.

He went ahead to plead with the Federal Government to seek the support of the Chadian army in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency.

Some Nigerians that reacted to the Tweet described the governor as a true Nigerian and honest hustler.

@ibmojotu99 said, “A true Nigeria, honest hustler, hard worker and a dedicated leader, you shall live long and help change this country for the better…”
