The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has donated two ventilators to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital to assist in bridging the shortage shortage of ventilators in the country following the spread of COVID-19 to Nigeria.

The shortage of ventilators has been a source of concern for many Nigerians including lawmakers and public health experts. A ventilator is a machine that pumps air in and out of the lungs and it is needed to assist some Corona Virus patients to breathe.

According to data provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Nigeria currently has 135 Corona virus cases, with about 25 of the cases being managed in Abuja.

An official of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday that JAMB and some other organisations in Nigeria had assisted in providing ventilators for the hospital, noting that“ as far as ventilators are concerned, we are comfortable for now.”

The Chief Medical Director, Bissallah Ekele, said Corona virus is a disease that affects the respiratory system, hence the number of hospitalised patients that would need breathing assistance is likely to also increase if the ailment spikes in Nigeria.
