Young woman sets record at US university, becomes first black woman to earn PhD in Physics

A young man named Monifa Phillips has made history as the first African-American woman to earn a Doctorate degree in Physics at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom.

Monifa Philips made history by becoming the first-ever black woman to earn a doctorate degree in Materials and Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Glasgow’s School of Physics, Scotland in the United Kingdom.

She shared her achievement of bagging the degree on Twitter with pictures of her thesis. ”This week I was the very first black woman to graduate from the Uni of Glasgow with a PhD in Physics,” she said.

Monifa said she is proud of her accomplishment as a black British woman who achieved a feat in a predominantly white, male field.

Monifa said making a space for herself in the physics field was challenging but she was able to pull through with the help of her family and community, she was able to pull through.

The head of the University of Glasgow’s College of Science and Engineering, Professor Muffy Calder, told Teen Vogue that the school is rooting for Phillips.

“Congratulations to Monifa Phillips on becoming the first black woman to earn a PhD from the University’s School of Physics in Materials and Condensed Matter Physics,” Calder said.
